Prep guide for Newborn clients of Cherish and Keep Photography

Follow this guide to best prepare for your newborn photo session with Cherish and Keep Photography

  1. Pack a soother

I’m not going to force this on you. Personally, I never gave my own baby a dummy because I was breastfeeding and I didn’t want to have any nipple confusion. The choice on this is 100% yours and I will make it work no matter what. But if you are open to trying a pacifier just for your session, they can be a huge aid in soothing and settling.

  2. Bring milk and more milk!

If you aren’t breastfeeding I’ll need you to bring milk for your baby. Bring more than you think you’ll need. I know your baby is probably feeding every 3 hours or so, but we want your little darling to be super relaxed and comfortable - think milk drunk and dreamy. Sessions take around 2-3 hours and there is plenty of time for feeding at the beginning of the session and any other time that your baby needs it. There is also a comfy mama chair and bed if you need it for breastfeeding.

  3. Time the sleep

Again, I’m not going to force this one on you. I know you’re probably just starting to establish a routine that works for you. Other newborn photographers swear by telling parents to keep their little one up for 2 hours before the session. I’m not here to sleep deprive a newborn baby! Most clients travel 30-45 minutes to me and any baby who is already a little sleepy will probably sleep in the car for this trip. We want to avoid this so that it is possible for your baby to have a decent sleep once they get here.

If it is possible to have your baby sleep up to shortly before you leave, skip the pre-drive feeding and even have a parent or sibling sit with baby to smile and pull faces at them it might be enough to keep them awake until they get here. Once you get here we will change baby’s nappy, wrap, feed and burp them so that they can relax into the session and sleep nothing like a baby.

  4. Put something comfy and loose on baby

We want to dress baby in something that is easy to remove so that we upset them as little as possible right before their session. I have all wraps and outfits for bub here in my studio so don’t worry about bringing your baby dressed up in their best outfit.
